Unit 3: Food – Vocabulary
We can put food into different groups:
·
Grains: bread, cereal,
pasta, rice
·
Fruit:
apples, bananas, grapes, oranges, pears, strawberries
·
Vegetables: cabbage, carrots,
green peppers, lettuce, onions, peas, potatoes, tomatoes
·
Meat & other protein: beans,
beef, chicken, eggs, lamb, nuts
·
Dairy products: cheese,
cream, milk, yogurt
·
Fat, oil and sugar: butter,
candy, oil, potato chips
We often use special words with food:
· a bottle of oil, water, juice, milk, soda
· a bunch of radishes, grapes, bananas, parsley
· a jar of jam, honey, olives, mayonnaise
· a loaf of bread, brown bread, white bread
·
a dozen eggs, oranges, roses
· a kilogram of apples, rice, sugar, meat
· a box of potato chips, cereal, chocolates,
cookies
· a bar of chocolate, soap
· a tin of sardines, tuna, peas, tomatoes
· a head of lettuce, cabbage, garlic
· a can of beans, soda, tuna
· a bag of sugar, rice, flour, potato chips
3. Useful verbs about food
We also use many verbs when we talk about
food:
·
eat fruit and vegetables
·
drink milk, juice, water
·
cook meat, rice, pasta
·
boil eggs or potatoes
·
fry potatoes or eggs
·
bake bread or a cake
·
grill meat or fish
·
cut vegetables
·
mix salad or ingredients
·
add salt, sugar or oil
·
order food in a restaurant
