Giving Opinions: Agree and Disagree Politely

Practise expressing an opinion, giving a reason and responding politely. A communication lesson for First Baccalaureate.

1. Useful expressions

Give your opinion

  • I think that…
  • In my opinion,…
  • I believe that…

Agree

  • I agree with you.
  • That is a good point.
  • I think so too.

Disagree politely

  • I see your point, but…
  • I am not sure I agree.
  • I understand, but I think…

Build a stronger answer: opinion + because + reason.

I think reading is useful because it helps us learn new words.

2. Read a short dialogue

Amine: In my opinion, learning with a partner is helpful.
Salma: I agree with you because we can explain things to each other.
Youssef: I see your point, but I sometimes prefer studying alone because it is quieter.

3. Identify the function

Write O (opinion), A (agreement) or D (polite disagreement).

  1. I think so too.
  2. In my opinion, sport is important.
  3. I am not sure I agree.
  4. That is a good point.
  5. I believe that school clubs are useful.
  6. I understand, but I think we need more time.
Show answers

1. A · 2. O · 3. D · 4. A · 5. O · 6. D

4. Complete a dialogue

A: I think learning English is useful because ______.
B: I agree with you. It also ______.
A: In my opinion, watching videos is the best way to learn.
B: I see your point, but ______.

There is more than one correct answer. Give clear reasons.

5. Discuss with a partner

  • Books are better than films.
  • Students should have more school clubs.
  • Learning in a group is better than learning alone.

Choose one statement. Take turns giving an opinion and a reason. Your partner should agree or disagree politely.

Self-check

Did I give a reason? Did I listen to my partner? Did I respond respectfully?

Common mistake: Say “I agree”, not “I am agree”.
